shazza: Pity Party

With excellent vocals and digestibly uplifting instrumentation, “Pity Party”, the latest single from Singaporean pop singer-songwriter shazza (real name Shareefa Aminah) is a hidden gem. The independent artist’s third single thus far, she comfortably steps away from the formula of her previous two singles “It Takes Two” and “August” in favour of a fresh, upbeat flavour.

Far from cheesy proximities, the track’s chorus features an infectious hook: “It’s a pity party / And I threw it for me,” she sings. The track’s topped off by the excellent work of producer Adele Lim of Homeground Studios, who elevates shazza's strengths, with snappy boom-bap drums, pianos and tasteful harmonies. However, it feels at times like only glimpses of shazza's holding back on her vocal prowess - with a lot left in the tank waiting to be unearthed if she lets loose. Nevertheless, from the track’s festive visual, you can tell shazza’s got the balloons and confetti ready.
