Houg / VIDEOTAPEMUSIC: 7 Ain’t Home

Singaporean chillwave producer Houg is gearing up fast to his first proper full-length, The Biting Tempo, and so far, we’ve been treated to a slew of groovy singles. On the table have been funky sax-topped jams done together with Tokyo city pop adjacents Fontana Folle, and cuts with Thai soul sextet Supergoods - this time, the collaborative streak’s going back to Japan on the album’s fourth single album, as he teams up with electronic producer VIDEOTAPEMUSIC and his inimitable VHS-reminiscent quirk. It’s got both of their signatures infused for some sensual analog goodness - with VIDEOTAPEMUSIC’s signature soundscapes dialed right in with pristine drums and glowing synths, Houg croons about the passing of time, nocturnal thoughts lingering on paralysis and passivity. Following the lush work of 2020’s The Oscillation Scene (which Big Duck thought was one of that year’s best!), The Biting Tempo is shaping up to be a solid follow-up piece for Houg.
