Don Aaron : ITS UR BODY
Tossing caution to the wind, vaporpop artist Don Aaron’s latest joint, ITS UR BODY, clocks in at a cool short running length of just 2 minutes and 13 seconds. It appears Don Aaron is going for quality over quantity – and oh is it the very definition of.
Pairing dance rhythms with hypnotic, grooving synth work, ITS UR BODY is a captivating track that doesn’t fight for your attention – but rather eases you into it. “You can do what you want with it. You know why? It’s your body.” Aaron declares, continuously driving home the track’s sex-positive message with its offbeat, albeit catchy nature. Before you know it, the track’s repetitive low-pitched mantra’s latched itself onto your mind. While no <3, my favourite song from the dapat music connoisseur, ITS UR BODY is quantifiably a banger in its own right, with its unstoppable, retro-flavored grooves. Although the song might feel strange in the middle of a playlist, the song would work wonders in the right situation – best at high volumes to energise you before leaving for work.
Compared to his previous work, ITS UR BODY manages to sound a tad bit more modern, but still retains a classic Howard Jones-esque sound. Of course, I mean the 80s synthpop artist here, and not the vocalist for Killswitch Engage. Here, that vintage feeling really comes across especially with its percussion patch, with the constant hybrid snare/clap patterns on the bar's 2 and 4s really boosting the subconscious head-bob you’ll find yourself caught in. I'm a sucker for crescendos and instruments that slowly joinin the fray as the song progresses. Here, when the funky guitar joins in at the three-quarter mark of the song, it hits just the right spot. With his guitar virtuosics, Aaron’s also best seen live, a setting this track would certainly translate to smoothly as well. For all our sakes, I hope he plays a live show soon after we are all able to.
